How the size is calculated

Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch. The finished size is simply stitches ÷ stitches per inch. A design 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide. On evenweave or linen you usually stitch "over two" threads, so 28-count fabric gives 14 stitches per inch — the same size as 14-count Aida.

Choosing a fabric count

Frequently asked questions

How much extra fabric should I leave?

Three inches (about 7.5 cm) on every side is a safe default. It gives room for a hoop or scroll frame while stitching and for mounting or framing afterwards.

How many stitches should my pattern be?

For a portrait or pet photo, 80–150 stitches across keeps faces recognizable. Simple icons and lettering look good at 30–60 stitches. Set the size in our pattern maker and the chart shows the finished size as you go.
