Why place value matters
Place value is the idea that a digit's position decides its value: the 4 in 347 means 4 tens, or 40. It is the foundation for regrouping in addition and subtraction, for long multiplication and division, and later for decimals.
Teaching tips
- Build numbers. Base-ten blocks or bundles of 10 straws make "3 tens and 4 ones" something children can hold.
- Say it in expanded form. "3,045 is 3 thousands, 0 hundreds, 4 tens and 5 ones" — the zero is where most errors happen.
- Round with a number line. Is 347 closer to 300 or 400? Marking the halfway point (350) makes the rule visible.
Common mistakes
- Naming the digit instead of its value (saying "4" when asked the value of the 4 in 347).
- Dropping zeros in expanded form (3,045 = 3,000 + 45 instead of 3,000 + 40 + 5).
- Rounding 350 down instead of up — numbers exactly halfway round up.
Frequently asked questions
How big are the numbers at each grade?
1st grade uses two-digit numbers, 2nd grade three-digit, 3rd grade four-digit, 4th grade up to six digits and 5th grade up to seven digits.
How does rounding handle numbers exactly halfway?
They round up, as taught in US schools — 350 rounds to 400 and 2,500 rounds to 3,000.
Is there a worksheet for comparing numbers?
Yes — choose "Compare Numbers" under Number Structure in the generator for problems with <, > and =.
