How addition develops from K to 3rd grade

Kindergartners add within 10 by counting objects and fingers. In 1st grade children add within 20 and start using strategies such as making ten (8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3) and doubles plus one (6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1). 2nd grade introduces two-digit addition with regrouping, often called carrying, and 3rd grade extends it to numbers up to 1,000.

Frequently asked questions

What is addition with regrouping?

When the digits in one column add up to 10 or more, the ten is "regrouped" (carried) to the next column. In 47 + 38, the ones make 15, so you write 5 and carry 1 ten, giving 85. Our 2nd grade addition worksheets always include regrouping.

How many problems should a worksheet have?

For daily practice, 10–20 problems is plenty. Use the "Number of Questions" setting in the generator; it fits as many as you choose onto printable pages.

Are answer keys included?

Yes. Tick "Include Answer Key" before exporting the PDF and a separate answer page is added at the end.
