What children learn about money
1st graders learn the names and values of a penny (1¢), nickel (5¢), dime (10¢) and quarter (25¢). 2nd graders count collections of mixed coins, write amounts with ¢ and $, and solve word problems such as making change.
Teaching tips
- Sort, then count. Count quarters first, then dimes, nickels and pennies — biggest to smallest.
- Count up to make change. For a 65¢ item paid with $1, count up from 65¢: 75¢, 100¢ — that's 35¢ change.
- Use real coins alongside the worksheet; size and value don't match (a dime is smaller than a nickel), which confuses many children.
Common mistakes
- Counting every coin as one.
- Mixing up the nickel and the dime.
- Writing $35 instead of 35¢ or $0.35.
Frequently asked questions
Which coins are used?
US pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Totals of a dollar or more are written in dollars, smaller totals in cents.
Is there ever zero change?
No — the amount paid is always more than the price.
Can I make a mixed review sheet?
Generate one coin sheet and one making-change sheet and print them together, or use a Pro pass to export several versions at once.
