Learning to read an analog clock
1st graders tell time to the hour and half hour. 2nd graders read clocks to the nearest five minutes and learn a.m. and p.m. 3rd graders solve elapsed-time problems to the minute. Each clock on our worksheets is drawn with an hour hand that moves between numbers as the minutes pass — just like a real clock.
Teaching tips
- Hour hand first. Cover the minute hand and ask "what hour is it about?" before reading minutes.
- Count by fives around the clock face; skip-counting practice pays off here.
- Use a timeline for elapsed time: jump to the next full hour, then add the rest.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the hour and minute hands.
- Reading the hour as the next number when the hour hand is just past halfway (2:40 read as 3:40).
- Forgetting to switch a.m. to p.m. when elapsed time passes noon.
Frequently asked questions
Do the worksheets show real clock faces?
Yes. Clock-reading problems draw an analog clock with numbers and both hands; children write the time on the line.
Is elapsed time written in 12-hour time?
Yes, with a.m. and p.m., matching how US schools teach it.
Can I print the clocks larger?
Increase Font Size in the Layout panel — the clocks scale with it — and use 1 or 2 columns.
