How fractions are taught, grade by grade
3rd grade introduces fractions as equal parts of a whole and as points on a number line, and compares fractions with the same numerator or denominator. 4th grade adds and subtracts fractions with like denominators, finds equivalent fractions and works with mixed numbers. 5th grade adds and subtracts unlike denominators and begins multiplying and dividing with fractions.
Teaching tips
- Start with pictures. Our 3rd grade sheets draw fraction bars and number lines so children see the parts before the symbols.
- "The bottom names the pieces, the top counts them." A simple phrase that prevents most early mistakes.
- Common denominators come from multiples. For 1/4 + 1/6, list multiples of 4 and 6 until they meet at 12.

Common mistakes
- Adding the denominators: 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8.
- Thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4.
- Stopping before the answer is in simplest form.
Frequently asked questions
Are answers given in simplest form?
Yes. Every answer is reduced, and answers greater than one are written as mixed numbers (for example 1 2/5).
Which fraction division is included?
Following the 5th grade standard, the worksheets divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions, such as 1/3 ÷ 4 and 4 ÷ 1/3.
Do the 3rd grade worksheets have pictures?
Yes — shaded fraction bars and number lines are drawn on the worksheet and print sharply in the PDF.
