The long division steps

Most children learn a repeating cycle: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down (some remember it as "Does McDonald's Sell Burgers?"). Repeat until there are no digits left to bring down; whatever is left is the remainder. In our answer keys a remainder is written like 721 R1.

Frequently asked questions

When do children learn long division?

In the US Common Core, 4th graders divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit divisors and 5th graders divide by two-digit divisors.

Do the worksheets include remainders?

About half of the 4th and 5th grade problems have remainders and half divide evenly, so children practise both.

Is there space to show work?

Set Columns to 1 or 2 and increase Vertical Spacing in the Layout panel to leave room for the long division steps.
